Moving from Toronto to Caledonia or Hamilton? Try an ordinary Tuesday first

More room, a different pace and perhaps a garden you can actually do something with.
There are plenty of reasons to consider a move from Toronto to Caledonia, Hamilton or Ancaster. But a lovely Saturday viewing won’t tell you everything about living there.
Before choosing the house, try the routine.
Make the journey you’ll actually make
If you commute, test the route at the time you would normally travel. Consider how often you need to be in the office, your transport options and what happens when the usual route is disrupted.
A map gives you distance. Your working week gives that distance meaning.
Visit the places you’ll use
Find the grocery shop, investigate local services and spend time around the neighbourhood.
If schools or childcare matter, confirm the relevant boundaries and availability directly. If you rely on public transport, look at the actual timetable for your journey.
“Nearby” can mean very different things when you’re on foot.
Compare homes with the same questions
A larger property can bring more space to enjoy and more to maintain. Look closely at heating, outdoor upkeep, parking and the condition of the home.
For rural or fringe properties, confirm the individual services and systems rather than assuming they match what you’re used to.
Picture the week, not just the weekend
Where will you walk the dogs? How will visitors get there? What happens when you need something after work?
None of this takes the excitement out of moving. It helps you choose somewhere you’ll enjoy once the boxes are unpacked and the takeaway menus have been located.
The question you should have asked: Will I enjoy an ordinary Tuesday here?
If you’re weighing Toronto West against Hamilton, Ancaster or Caledonia, let’s compare the move around your actual life.
